Richard Ponsonby-Fane

I am surprised by the following:

How were you able to access an on-line version of any Ponsonby-Fane book? In my experience with Google Book Search, there is nothing but bibliographic citation data available on-line. I've been using an actual hard-copy book acquired by the New York Public Library through inter-library loan for brief, two-week periods. If your ability to access books is different than mine, I'm very eager to learn about it. Yes, it's nice to turn the pages. Yes, I like lingering over the way Ponsonby-Fane expresses himself. Nevertheless, it is clear that on-line internet access whenever I want it would be very welcome.

Could it be that your Google Book Search engine is calibrated differently than mine? In hopes that it might make a difference, I tried searching via Google.nl.

As it happens, my most oft-cited online source was published by Dutch scholar Isaac Titsingh (1745-1812); however, using the conventional Google book-search engine, I can't always access either of the full-text, on-line versions of Nihon Odai Ichiran which were digitized by the University of Michigan and by Stanford University. Most often, I need to "find" the book via a citation-link I've posted in a Wikipedia article; otherwise, I find that what I know is available remains oddly inaccessible. Perhaps this is another example of that kind of search-engine glitch?

Alternately, I suppose this may have been nothing more than a curious mistake? I did post a link to an on-line page in Emperor of Japan by Donald Keene -- here at pp. 531-532? Perhaps that was the page you checked out, and it was a simple mistake in remembering that you were looking at something written by Richard Ponsonby-Fane? --Tenmei (talk) 17:11, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

Romanization for words of English origin

On the MOS:JP talk page, a discussion has been started about including or not including romanizations for words of English origin, such as Fainaru Fantajī in Final Fantasy (ファイナルファンタジー, Fainaru Fantajī) (for the sake of simplicity, I called this case "words of English origin", more information on semantics here).

Over the course of a month, it has become apparent that both the parties proposing to include or not include those romanizations cannot be convinced by the arguments or guidelines brought up by the other side. Therefore, a compromise is trying to be found that will satisfy both parties. One suggestion on a compromise has been given already, but it has not found unanimous agreement, so additional compromises are encouraged to be suggested.

One universally accepted point was to bring more users from the affected projects in to help achieve consensus, and you were one of those selected in the process.

What this invitation is:

• You should give feedback on the first suggested compromise and are highly encouraged to provide other solutions.

What this invitation is not:

• This is not a vote on including or excluding such romanizations.
• This is not a vote on compromises either.

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being minor in the usual way.

For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. With the script in place, you can continue with this functionality indefinitely (its use is governed by WP:MINOR). If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.
