Chillhop redirtect
[edit]I don't think it's correct for "chillhop" to redirect here, it's a fairly distinct genre of music with really very little in common with trip, at least to my layman's ears.
The fact chillhop isn't mentioned once in the article supports this. I'd argue that a new article be made.

chillhop?
[edit]I think it may grow ever trickier to incorporate new genre names, like "chillhop", into wikipedia, since you need major music media to define them, and we barely have major music media anymore.
If the link from "chillhop" still exists, it should either be omitted, or the genre defined using the correct sources and citations, and it's relationship to trip-hop defined clearly in the article.
I strongly suspect "chillhop" is a completely popular term, i.e. something defined by users and makers, in playlists and such, and therefore pretty impossible to define using wikipedia terms.

Forest for the Trees album recorded in 1993, uses the phrase "trip-hop" a bunch.
[edit]It wasn't released until 1997 due to Stephenson's health problems, but was definitely floating around out there. I actually asked Matos on Twitter about it—he didn't know the album but was confident it was a coincidence. I'm agnostic on that until someone turns up something, and I'm not sure what the source would be beyond the album itself, but just thought I'd note it here for anyone interested.

- The term trip hop was definitely around before the Mixmag article, though it sounds like the article was the first mainstream mention. That's super interesting to hear though that the term was used on album supposedly recorded in 93. I'll have to check that out. I'd be very interested in knowing all of the first instances of the term.
- So far I've found multiple references citing the band Marden Hill as the first act to spawn the term, though it's more specifically attributed to DJ Ashley Beedle who was doing one of their remixes and supposed said: "This is fucked up, it's Hip Hop but it's trippy. It's Trip Hop!" You can see that cited here: http://audiotracker.blogspot.com/2012/05/marden-hill.html and here in the bio and the comments https://www.last.fm/music/Marden+Hill I don’t know where these sources are citing this from, but, I am very familiar with Ashley Beedle’s work and he was definitely doing trip hop around the same time Lavelle was in the pretty early 90s, so it seems pretty plausible.
