Pronunciation of her name

[edit]

I'll have to look it up, but going from the pronunciation I was taught, by several different teachers, this spelling of the name of incorrect; as I was taught it, the name would be pronounced "bodval" (Bodmhaill), whereas this version would be pronounced "bogmall" -- Jim Regan 02:46 12 Jul 2003 (UTC)

I've added the spellings Bodhmann and Bómall, with references.
Pronouncing "dh" as 'g' is a Munsterism. I don't know where she was from but she raised Fionn in the Slieve Bloom Mountains. That region, as far as I know, spoke what we today call the Connacht dialect, so it seems more likely there was no 'g' or 'd' sound.
There was an attempt to bless Munster Irish as being the national dialect, so there's a certain generation where the non-Gaeltacht speakers all consider Munster Irish to be the right way to pronounce Irish. Great floors (talk) 00:50, 1 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
