Janete Carter

[edit]

I got tothis page by a redirect from janete carter, but there is nothing mentioning her name. who is she.

Could be she's Sara Carter and A. P. Carter's daughter. Airproofing (talk) 22:33, 17 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • The Error has been removed. Saughters are June Carter Cash, Helen Carter, and Anita Carter

Picture

[edit]

Can someone find a non-copyright picture of the Carters for this page? I love this one: http://xroads.virginia.edu/~1930s/RADIO/c_w/images/carter2.JPG, but I'm not sure it can be used. Bill 19:23 22 May 2003 (UTC)

Maces Springs

[edit]

I'm going to see if I can get my county public library to interlibrary loan a copy of "History of Scott County, Virginia" by Robert M. Addington for me. If I'm successful and if this volume has the information I hope it does, I'll create a page for Maces Springs, Virginia. Bill 17:58 23 May 2003 (UTC)

I've started an article based on Dawidoff's description of the settlement, maybe you can flesh it out when you get the book Tiles 23:29 24 May 2003 (UTC)

Outstanding. It will take at least a week to obtain the book. I'm not even certain there will be much (or any) detail about Maces Springs. Bill 18:05 26 May 2003 (UTC)

Voice qualities

[edit]

I deleted: "A.P. sang bass, Sara alto, and Maybelle soprano". After listening to a more modern CD of Maybelle singing alone, I really doubt she was a soprano. A Web source seems to indicate that both Sara and Maybelle were altos, but given the doubt, I think it's easier just to omit the assertion. Can anyone confirm the fact of the matter? Bill 17:38, 5 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

According to Dawidoff, "Sara Carter was a natural alto who could sing high enough to handle soprano parts". Tiles 09:49, 8 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Traditional voice classifications don't really apply. Maybelle sang higher than Sara, but she was no soprano in the normal sense. Sara sang in what is conventionally tenor range (I am one of those).--Paul Riedesel 21:01, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit]

Under "External links," the URL for The Carter Family Memorial Music Center, Inc. should be updated to http://www.carterfamilyfold.org. Because I am new here, I'm afraid to try it myself!

Done. Thanks. --TantalumTelluride 21:41, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers

[edit]

Jimmie Rodgers never recorded in Nashville. The 1931 recording session with the Carter Family took place in Louisville, Kentucky.

Instruments

[edit]

Just a head's up: in this article when the Carter's are first identified individually the instruments played by Maybelle and Sara are noted, but not A.P. Can someone fix this?

A.P. didn't play any instruments.

June Carter and Jimmy Carter

[edit]

Some work needs to be done to disambiguate the various articles and categories relating to singer June Carter and former president Jimmy Carter, who I don't believe are related. There should probably be two articles, with disambig links between the two. Also, the "Category:Carter family" needs to be split, because it has people in it relating to both families...

catalog?

[edit]

What I'm looking for is a complete catalog. I don't mean a discography of current compilation albums; I mean a list of the original recordings, the year, record label and number. Can't find it on any of the Carter pages. --Bluejay Young 02:36, 6 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

please remove rosanne kathy cindy and tara and vivian cash from the family tree they are not the carter family add rosie nix carter

Carter Family category call for deletion

[edit]

Since people might not have a watch on the category but might have a watch on this article, you might want to be aware that there is a CFD on the Carter Family category. See Carter family Category CFD --Larrybob 21:21, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I looked at the link with the arguments about why this page should be deleted and do not agree with them. In particular I do not agree that mentioning the Carter Family in the Johnny Cash family tree is sufficient. And I don't agree that because there are many families named Carter, this entry should be deleted. This Carter Family was an inductee of the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1970. See http://www.countrymusichalloffame.com/site/inductees.aspx?cid=106
Their recording days spanned from 1927-1941, a period during which they were one of the most popular acts in country music. Some of their songs have had quite some longevity and have been recorded by many subsequent artists, including Will the Circle Be Unbroken and Wildwood Flower, along with many others:

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/carterfamily/filmmore/pt.html

Encylopedia Britannica has an entry for Carter Family, mentioning Johnny Cash almost as an aside because of his marriage to Maybelle Carter's daughter June. Do any of you have access to Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians? I don't believe they would treat this important group as a mere footnote to the life of Johnny Cash, as much as I admire him.October 13, 2007. Npomea 00:28, 14 October 2007 (UTC)NPomea[reply]

"Second generation" section - order or year incorrect?

[edit]

"By 1936, A.P. and Sara's marriage had dissolved. Sara married A.P.'s cousin, moved to California, and the group disbanded." This sentence should be at the top of this section to maintain timeline. Or the year should read "1946".

The current version is very confusing. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.149.127.32 (talk) 04:30, 9 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Extended Family Tree

[edit]

The current version of the extended family tree makes it look like Joseph Breen is the son of Carlene Carter and Nick Lowe, when he is Carlene Carter's 4th husband. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.95.77.13 (talk) 00:41, 9 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sandra Carter

[edit]

According to http://www.hankwilliamsdiscography.com/CarterFamily/StudSessions27-42.php A "Sandra Carter" played autoharp at the 2 August 1927 recording session and contributed both autoharp and vocals to the 9 May 1928 recording session. Can someone please verify and edit article. PCB — Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.237.47.169 (talk) 22:29, 28 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Bob Dylan and "Wayworn Traveller"

[edit]

After fixing the broken reference for the material on Bob Dylan's cover of "Wayworn Traveller" and his subsequent of its music use in other songs, I discovered that that original reference did not contained any reliably-sourced information supporting it – only a reader posting a comment with that info. I've therefore replaced this reference with a {{fact}} tag to encourage someone to dig up a reliable source. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 17:08, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

What is this article's subject?

[edit]

The article remains oddly vague about its actual topic. In the introductory section it says 'Carter Family' was a musical group. In the 'History' section (ff.) all of a sudden it's THE Carter Family that made THEIR first recordings ('their' might still be O.K., I guess). It's never made clear what (The?) Carter Family really is. I expect something like: "Carter Family was a musical group named after their founding member's family name 'Carter'". In the section titled 'Second generation' it eventually becomes obvious that the article actually is NOT about a musical group or band named 'Carter Family' but about a family named 'Carter' whose noted members were musically very influential. Members and descendants of the family named 'Carter' over the years formed different musical groups or worked as solo artists carrying the family name from early 20th to 21st century's music culture and business. I came across this article looking for info on the Gibson L-5 guitar (A famed model played by Maybelle Carter). I'm not particularly interested in any of the family members or associated artists. It's odd that there's no mention of the Carter/Cash marriage (except in the 'extended' family tree), although their offspring is part of the family's?/musical group's? alleged 'Third Generation'. I imagine reading the article on 'The Beatles' when there is not a single sentence about John Lennon and Yoko Ono being married. Only the peculiar mix in their child's, musician Sean Taro Ono Lennon's name in the 'Legacy' section... It doesn' take much. So, I'm going to add it (edit). Korinthus (talk) 23:34, 30 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed, the group's name was "THE Carter Family" and should have a redirect from "Carter Family" instead of vice versa. Jackaroodave (talk) 13:25, 11 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
