Questions of the day

• How large does a town, village, hamlet have to be in order to be featured?

Well if it has a name, its a place, so put it in the list. As long as I can find it on multimap, then its ok. Look at 'Kates Bridge', it didnt exist 5 years ago. (well actually it did, it was a forgotten place name), and its only 2 houses and a petrol station ,and a very small bridge over a narrow bit of the source of the River Glen. The whole thing barely covers 150 yards by 150 yards.

I'd say that if it appears on the 1:200,000 map on Multimap, it should appear. Looking at the 1:200,000 map centered on Louth I don't think it would be far wrong to have an article for everywhere that appears on there. IMHO, there'd be only four or five places that wouldn't need an article (e.g. South Somercotes Fen Houses). In addition, where there's one village but separate parishes, only one entry is needed (e.g. Saltfleetby). Dupont Circle 15:59, 16 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Yes, but it no good for our purposes. Thats a list as at 1830, and just glancing at the A's i see 'Antons Gowt' isnt there. Lincolnshire Poacher 20:15, 17 Apr 2005 (UTC)

BRACKENHAM?!!!!!

where the hell is brackenham? Ive lived here 50 years and I've never seen it in Lincolnshire, and Streetmap or Multimap dont list it. On the other hand the County Council webby lists it, but doesnt give any clues where it is!!!

(goes into old fart mode) I wish people would stop adding villages to this county without asking me first..............

When I created this list, and started creating the pages for every village, i adpoted the standard format:

for the end. I see someone has been going through deleting all this and replacing it with this form:

This is inferior in all respects. It is less information and requires the user to do more work to obtai nthe same information as the previous form. I will revert all pages to the original form, but it will be a lot of work. Please do not make such a major alteration to page formats in future without discussing it here first.

A certain town missed out...

Despite including my home village (Huttoft, which is a tiny place!) the list does not appear to include the much larger town (or village, me and my Dad are always arguing over what it is) of Sutton-On-Sea. Of course it must be a silly mistake, as due to the size and attractions, there seems to be more point in Sutton-On-Sea being on the list than Huttoft! Empty section tags

Someone has been adding Empty section tags. This seems like a complete waste of time. Are placenames starting with X going to sponatneously be generated to improve Wikipedia? Honestly, some people. Shall we remove them?--Robert EA Harvey (talk) 09:01, 6 November 2010 (UTC)

They have been removed now and can be replaced if a town or village is found.--BSTemple (talk) 10:43, 6 November 2010 (UTC)

The tags were added by a BOT and are added when you use AWB with "Auto tags" option set. It is not someone thinking that a section needs filling in but an automatic process spotting headings without content. Keith D (talk) 11:55, 6 November 2010 (UTC)

Other Lists

This is a good list. But I have just added Scrub Hill, and found that it is already on another list. List of United Kingdom locations: Sb-Sf. That is a better list, it has mapping for a start.

Is there any way that that list and this list could both be derived from some underlying transwiki page??? that one is sorted by name, not county. Could we have a master list and sort it by name for that page and by county for this one? --Robert EA Harvey (talk) 09:59, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

This list is part of a set one for each of the counties. The other list is one of a set of gazette entries covering the whole of the UK. The county lists started out as a quick way of getting to other places in the county, probably rather than using a navbox, though some have been changed from the basic format and probably all need re-aligning back to a common format again. Hubberts Bridge

request for help and advice regarding Tumby

There are actually three places called Tumby in Lincolnshire: Tumby Tumby Woodside Tumby Moorside

I have created a page for all three, as I believe thats the best way they can be represented, but all are under the heading Tumby Woodside which links here. Being a newbie I am wary of going and starting to change page names etc, but feel it would be best represented if it were under the heading of Tumby, with Tumby Woodside and Tumby Moorside incorporated into it. This simply because thats the way it seems to sound or appear logical. Can anyone help with advice or discussion regarding agreement on this, and if so point me in the right direction as to changing the name and redirecting Tumby Woodside and Tumby Moorside to "Tumby". Cheers Keith - no time like the present so just got on with it and hopefully, everyone will agree its done as best can be. It seemed to me that Tumby, Tumby Moorside and Tumby Woodside were best represented as one item, they are all very small places. I came across it when reading a history of Brigg Grammar School - the trustees had various estates in Fulsby in the 19th century so it must have been a significant place then... Is it worth adding a mention of Fulsby in the Tumby article? There seems very little about it on the web, but there are Doomsday book references. Dsergeant (talk) 19:21, 21 July 2011 (UTC)

Welcome - I probably shouldnt say it, but if 99% of the cites are good ones, and you get one slightly dodgy one, but it kind of backs everything else I dare to "be bold" and use it - such as GENUKI which I only use if I cant find info anywhere else. Yes go ahead and add in anything you thinks useful. There was a lock there, although now disused, but I couldnt anything much to say about it so I left it out. Derthorpe/Dexthorpe?

Run into trouble looking for information on Derthorpe or Dexthorpe near Well and Dalby. Have managed to find some online refs to both Derthorpe and Dexthorpe. Are they the same place or two different places - can anyone help? Many thanks Panderoona (talk) 12:30, 1 July 2011 (UTC)

Map with links to Lincoln, Towns and other notable places in Lincolnshire!

I have noticed that on the noticed on the list of places in Northamptonshire page they had a special map with place names and links to the towns and cities of that county, Would it be possible to create a map like that for Lincolnshire with links and tags for Lincoln, Grimsby, Scunthorpe, Boston, Grantham, Spalding, Louth, the smaller towns and other notable places within Lincolnshire. It uses the standard county map and adds the tags onto it. You can do the same with the Lincolnshire map File:Lincolnshire UK location map.svg. Keith D (talk) 16:31, 17 September 2011 (UTC)

I have no idea on how to work on maps at all, I was hoping that someone else could do it if possible. I would be very greatful and would make a great addition to both this page and the overall page for Lincolnshire.( MOTORAL1987 (talk) 14:48, 20 September 2011 (UTC) )
