hi, i'm yossarian holmberg, a.k.a. yossman. i run the yossman.net internet hosting network, in kitchener-waterloo, ontario, canada. i also help run the byxnet IRC network, you can use irc.yossman.net if you'd like to check it out, using an IRC client, or you may also use http://webchat.yossman.net/ for a web-based entry into the IRC network (using CGI:IRC, see "http://cgiirc.org/").

i'm pasting the entire contents of the 're-instated' byxnet IRC network wikipedia page (irc.yossman.net) into my user profile in an effort to get wikipedia administrators to leave this information alone somewhere on their site. i'm really disturbed at the censorship-oriented actions coming from the current wikipedia.org administration recently.

for a small group of people to be deciding what is information worthy of being published in a publicly-editable encyclopedia is self-defeatest; do wikipedia admins not realize they got to where they are today by being different than the larger organizations that impose draconian standards on what passes for 'good, verifiable' information? it is my hope that wikipedia.org saves itself from this egotistical censor-like behaviour.

byxnet wikipedia.org article entry, as of 2008-06-09 at ~ 11:00pm:

Byxnet

this page was deleted from wikipedia.org on 2008-06-03 due to recent changes of wikipedia administration, deciding to be ruthlessly pro-active in deciding what is acceptable content to have on wikipedia, putting extremely short timelines on vote deadlines, and coming up with reasons for deletion that do not make much sense given the context of what we're talking about, the history of an IRC network. the following admin gave the following set of reasons:

00:12, 4 June 2008 Rjd0060 (Talk | contribs) deleted "Byxnet" ‎ (Deleted because expired WP:PROD; Reason given: Article does not establish third party notability. Article lists no notable information for network. Possible COI. Article believed inappropriate for wikipedia.)

sending email to the people who recently edited the article would have been a good step for notifying about the pending deletion, especially given the short timeline! 'Watch This Page' would seem to be good for this type of thing, why did you guys not send an email to us when marking the page for deletion?

is this what we have to expect from wikipedia.org in the future? a continually shrinking set of articles due to a few administrator's tastes, and broken notification systems that don't warn you of major events about to take place in relation to articles being watched?

the original article follows in text-only format and will hopefully be revived to its old state once this is settled. byxnet IRC administrators would be happy to improve the article where it is possible to do so -- please give us more specific examples of where this article or topic does not meet wikipedia.org's standards at the moment, thanks.

byxnet is an IRC network, which spawned from the ashes of a combination of channels on EFnet, centered mainly around the first-person shooter gaming community of Quake, a game by Id Software, that followed their wildly popular game DOOM.

With the first servers coming online in 1997, the byxnet IRC network was officially named in 1998, formed by using the initials of the three founding people's nicknames: Bothrops, yossman (Yossarian Holmberg), and Xach. These founders maintained the first IRC servers for the network. By the end of 1999, both Xach and Bothrops had delinked; bothrops ceased running IRC services, and Xach joined the GIMP IRC network (see GIMPNet). From 2000 up to present day (2008), yossman has been the only founding member that continues to plays an active administrative role in maintaining the network, and continues to run the core byxnet IRC servers.

In February of 2001, byxnet linked with the Cognet IRC network, via irc.yossman.net and irc.catch22.org. In 2002, OpenIRC linked with the network via cognet, as irc.openirc.org. All three network names were acceptable to use when identifying the IRC network. In 2002, the anarchy.tamu.edu IRC server linked to byxnet via Cognet, after being a well-known EFnet IRC server for years.

Cognet and OpenIRC brought with them a few official Open Source project collaboration channels, such as #windowmaker, #sage, and #lopsa, and the combined networks enjoyed a five year period of co-operation and relative IRC network stability. By February 2008, OpenIRC was being scheduled for shutdown, and #lopsa had been moved to LOPSA's new official IRC network, on irc.lopsa.org.

In March of 2008, byxnet linked with dropnet, via irc.yossman.net and irc.ping.fr, at which point a total of 22 IRC servers were linked together. After a week's time, philosophical disagreements and politics surrounding the dropnet network linkage caused cognet administrators to delink from byxnet. Although efforts were made by administrators on all three networks to find common ground, byxnet and cognet did not end up re-linking, while byxnet and dropnet remain linked. At the present time there are no official plans to relink byxnet and cognet.
