Length and purpose
[edit]This article could get very very long, and serve very little purpose. See Lancaster County, Pennsylvania for a list of towns in a single county. Multiply that by the number of counties in the United States alone, and you can see where this is getting to. Lists of these small towns are probably better place in their respective counties. - My calculation for U.S. towns alone based on the U.S. Census Bureau (and this is *only* the official census districts), is over 35,000 towns, cities, and townships. This does lead me to wonder if this Wikipedia has what most encyclopedias have: an index. Because this is just an index of towns. As I recall there is a way to list all of the articles, but when I used it, it wasn't that easy to just find any old article. -- Ram-Man
Merge
[edit]Town listing should be merged with List of towns...? --Shallot 20:11, 30 Apr 2004 (UTC)
Done now. --Joy [shallot] 11:35, 18 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Categorization
[edit]There should be various pages for towns in differents population size category. Ex. "Towns with more than 1 000 000 habitant", "Towns with 500 000 to 1 000 000 habitant". With always a link on the "List of town 'for a particular' state" --PierreWiki 22:31, 24 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- Towns that large are in the list of cities anyway. We could probably use some explication regarding what each of the countries considers "towns" (as opposed to "cities"). --Joy [shallot] 22:35, 24 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- Why not just merging with list of cities ?? That itself (normally) redirect to list of town... --PierreWiki 22:39, 24 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- In English, the word "city" and the word "town" have two different meanings. In legal statutes, too. --Joy [shallot] 23:53, 24 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- I Now better understand the purpose of this article. It is important to make distinctive lists for towns and cities. But as stated in the Length and purpose section upper, it will be very hard to list every town here. Why not just make a list of list of town categorized by provinces, regions or states or lets say categorized by the first administrative subdivision of a country e.g. provinces for Canada, states for USA. This would lead to a list of the 'List of town' of each canadien province. As in :
- Canada
- List of communities in Alberta
- List of communities in British Columbia
- List of communities in Manitoba
- List of_communities in Newfoundland and Labrador
- And so on...
- Other country could follow the model. The guy who did United Kingdom already did it this way... Have a look!
- There is already a lot of work done as 'List of towns of ...' for the USA and 'List of communities in ...' for Canada. I don't think we have to duplicate this work here. But we can help to structure it.--PierreWiki 13:32, 25 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- Of course. Go ahead and subdivide if there's enough content. After all, we don't have a single list of cities, we have a list of cities by country. --Joy [shallot] 14:13, 25 Sep 2004 (UTC)
