This article is written in British English, which has its own spelling conventions (colour, travelled, centre, defence, artefact, analyse) and some terms that are used in it may be different or absent from other varieties of English. Monism / dualism

Mere agreement to the final text of a treaty is only the first stage, hence "dualist". For instance, Britain has yet to ratify the terms of the Arrest Convention 1999, so the earlier 1952 treaty is still in place.

International treaties also have to be ratified in monist systems. The second step needed in dualist systems is the passage of implementing legislation. A better example would be the European Convention on Human Rights which the UK ratified on 8 March 1951 but only incorporated into municipal law in 1998.
