Justin is the central figure of the story. He is a high-school dropout who was recruited by InfoCorp when he broke into their central fileservers when he was only 8 years old. He is an incredibly gifted hacker, alias Phoenix who works in InfoCorp's Chimera department, which is their corporate espionage and sabotage division. He breaks into other corporations, which is a regular practice in this world, and tries to steal their proprietary data thus allowing InfoCorp a competitive advantage. While he takes pride in the work that he does, in the back of his mind he is slightly troubled by working for a corporation. Unlike the ignorant masses of people who have been educated in the corporate-owned high schools which promote brand-name familiarity above Newton's laws of motion, he has access to the raw channels of information that runs across the secret backchannels of the internet. Because of this access, he is one of the few who are privy to the uncensored news which is not mentioned in the corporate-owned news channels. For the time being, he accepts working at a corporation because he is lavishly paid in computer equipment, an elite high-rise in InfoCorp's official headquarters/city, and in the sense that he is a part of the game and not one of the "sheep" whom he uses to refer to the uneducated masses of people. While he does not inquire as to the ethical nature of the work given to him by Trevor Goodchild (Name for now) , he is subconsciously bothered by the sheer power corporations wield over the population. As the story progresses, he will become increasingly bothered by this fact until the climax of the story where he can no longer afford to be passive about his dislike for corporate abuse of power and alienates his entire comfortable and lavish way of life for what he believes.
